Providing a space for students to discover independence through positive maritime experiences!
The Center for Wooden Boats supports youth as they develop the skills, abilities and attitudes necessary to enjoy sailing, work together, and have fun on the water. Programs target age-appropriate skill sets and are designed to build on each other so youth can come back summer after summer to play, learn and grow.

The Center for Wooden Boats and our partner US Sailing have worked to provide a sailing experience formed by the latest positive youth development and youth sports models.
Our Sailing Camps are broken up by age and skill level

This camp is a fantastic way to introduce our youngest sailors to the joys of being on the water. At this camp, children can learn the basics of sailing in a safe and supportive environment. Experienced instructors guide them through fun, hands-on activities that teach essential skills like steering, knot-tying, and understanding wind direction. The camp also emphasizes teamwork and confidence-building, as students work together to navigate their sailboats. With plenty of time for games and exploration, this camp ensures that every child has an exciting and memorable experience while fostering a love for sailing and the great outdoors. The sailors will sail in our Capri 14.2 with 4 little sailors and 1 instructor.

Students will develop tacking, jibing, sail trim, weight balance and capsize recovery skills while learning terminology and theory. Beginner sailors sail in teams of two to enhance their communication, observation, patience, and teamwork while practicing new skills. No experience necessary

Intermediate El Toro Sailor, ages 8-11

Tuition: $595 Members; $670 Non Members
Intermediate Sailors will add knowledge and skills to their foundation including getting out of irons, overboard recovery, and Rules of the Road. This is the next step for those who know the basics of sailing and are ready for something new. Intermediate Sailors sail solo refining observation and problem-solving skills while continuing to build confidence and independence. Must have completed Beginner Sailor (or equivalent). It is highly recommended that students do at least 2 weeks of Beginner Sailor before signing up for Intermediate Sailor.

During this weeklong class students will learn the importance of the basics of racing, such as race starting sequences, racing rules, common racecourses. This class will help students develop critical thinking and friendly competition. Students must have completed Intermediate Sailor (or equivalent) to participate!

This camp offers a unique blend of sailing and science for children. Campers will learn the basics of sailing, including boat handling, knot tying, and understanding wind patterns, all under the guidance of experienced instructors. They'll also discover the art of navigation, learning to read charts (nautical maps) and use a compass. They will also do some science adventures, with these they will dive into marine biology and environmental science, exploring the local ecosystem, conducting water quality tests, and learning about the amazing sea creatures.

An advanced sailing camp offers an exciting and challenging experience for young sailors looking to enhance their skills. These camps are designed for kids who have already mastered the basics and are ready to tackle more complex sailing techniques. Participants will learn advanced boat handling, sail trimming, and this on a Capri 22. The program emphasizes safety, teamwork, and fun. With an experienced instructor guiding them, sailors will not only improve their sailing abilities but also develop a deeper appreciation for the sport and the marine environment.

WOODWORKING CAMPS

This woodworking class gives students the opportunity to explore creating objects from their own imagination, while learning how tools hand tools effectively. Students will learn how to move from an idea, to a drawing, to building something out of wood. Students will be given opportunities to give constructive encouragement to each other while working independently in pairs.

Participants are able to apply a mix of their woodworking, sailing and teamwork skills by creating a seaworthy vessel as a group, and racing it against other group participants. Quick & Daring is hosted in the shallower waters of the beach in Lake Union Park.
Design, build and try out a boat of your own imagination. Students will work in teams to design and build a boat that will carry your team across the waters of Lake Union on Launch Day. In addition to basic woodworking skills, students will learn the principles of boat design, teamwork, and creativity, and basic principles of boat construction.

No, we do not offer extended care.

If you have a life jacket and would like them to wear their own, that is completely fine. We do have life jackets on site and have plenty for all of the campers.

Both woodworkers & sailing participants should plan to get wet every day of programming! On day one of sailing camp they will do a capsize drill/water comfort test in life jackets so instructors can see the confidence level of their students. on a daily basis they may be on a boat, swim, run through the park fountains, or play sponge tag; it is very likely they will get wet. Please pack an extra change of clothes for your students daily.

Youth Sailing Camps
Monday - Beach Day! Expect a day of dockside and beachside activities. Students will spend half the day doing float tests and capsize drills (all in PFDs). Students will also work on learning essential knots, rigging, learning parts of the boat, teamwork, and so much more!
Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday- a combination of dockside and on-the-water activities to build upon sailing skills
Friday - Long sail day! Students will sail towards the north end of the lake using all the skills learned over the week
Quick & Daring Woodworking Camp
Monday - Tour of campus, intro to tools, safety & expectations, hull & construction conversation, begin designing boats
Tuesday & Wednesday - Construction of boats
Thursday - Seal & Paint
Friday - strategize & race planning, 2 pm launch!!

CANCELLATION POLICY
For all course registrations, including youth camps, the following cancellation policy applies.
For private sailing lessons and boatbuilding classes, the cancellation policy outlined at the time of booking and in the confirmation email will be enforced.
Cancellation/change outside of 45 days: You will be charged a $50 admin fee and receive a refund for the remaining amount.
Cancellation/change within 45-15 days prior to start date: You will be charged a $50 admin fee and 50% tuition credit for the remaining amount towards a course within the same calendar year. There is no cash refund.
No refund or credit available upon cancelation within 14 days or less to start of program.
In the event of single day cancelations due to Covid, Wildfire Smoke, or Severe Weather no partial refunds will be issued. For weather related issues classes will be held on land.
CWB reserves the right to cancel a course and refund the participants in full.
