APPRENTICE BOATWRIGHT IN RESIDENCE

Job Description:  The Center for Wooden Boats (CWB) is seeking applicants for the Boatwright in Residence Apprenticeship Program. This is a three month contract position. CWB promotes Northwest Maritime Heritage through education, interpretation, and hands on experience in building, maintaining, and using historic small craft. Specifically, we support preserving the hands-on technical skills necessary for building and restoring traditional wooden small craft through our programmatic, volunteering, and apprenticeship opportunities. The organization has steadily grown over 45 years in this unwavering endeavor. Situated in a public park in the heart of the bustling South Lake Union neighborhood of Seattle, our boatbuilding efforts are a living exhibit themselves, capturing the imagination of those who visit the park.

The Boatwright in Residence Apprenticeship program is focused on providing young wooden boatbuilders who have recently graduated from a wooden boatbuilding school the opportunity to hone their skills and network with the local industry to help jump-start their careers. The Apprentice Boatwright will lead the selected project, with guidance from CWB’s Boatwrights. Project management tasks will include organizing and working with volunteer labor, raw materials procurement, project scheduling, and construction.

The Boatwright in Residence Apprenticeship program dates to the earliest days of the organization and has provided opportunities for many aspiring marine carpenters. In addition to boat restoration experience, the Apprentice will have the opportunity to fully immerse themselves in CWB’s wooden boat community. CWB will provide berthing for the Apprentice on one of its historic vessels. This three-month long program will pay a project stipend of $7,000 thanks to the generous support of our sponsors. We accept applications year round, on a rolling cycle.

Required Qualifications:

• Recent Graduate of a Wooden Boatbuilding Program or equivalent experience.

• Familiar with traditional boatbuilding techniques

• Experience complying with safety management practices

• A passion for being on the water, historic small boats, seamanship, and building community

• Ability to work in a diverse team setting

• Experience working with volunteers is a plus
