Youth Summer Programs Lead Instructor
FULL-TIME SEASONAL POSITION
beginning late-May and ending mid-September
The Center for Wooden Boats (CWB) seeks an experienced supervisor and instructor to take charge of the youth summer sailing and woodworking camps, field trips and summer pond boat program. This position is expected to assist with the delivery and instruction of summer programs approximately 50% of the time. Administration and supervision of the programs and youth instructors and staff make up the other 50%.
Hours: 40 hours/week
Type: Seasonal Full-time, Hourly, May-September.
Compensation: $21 - $23/ hour
Primary Responsibilities
Youth Summer Program Supervision & Delivery
Supervise youth woodworking instructors, sailing instructors, volunteer junior instructors, aftercare caretakers, field trip assistants, and all other youth program staff.
Participate in administration, registration, and approval of scholarships for summer youth camps, field trips and programs.
Assist in lesson plan and emergency protocol maintenance.
Work with the Youth Programs Manager to facilitate training for seasonal sailing instructors.
Work with the Shop Manager and woodworking instructors to oversee youth woodworking camps, ordering of supplies, and pre-season training and safety review.
Ensure all required information about youth program participants is delivered to instructors.
Provide radio backup for instructors during camps, acting as an instructor or providing on-dock supervision and instruction as needed.
Communicate with parents and resolve concerns.
Adhere to Youth Programs Quality Initiative requirements in all camps; maintain sufficient records and staff evaluations.
Act as a back-up instructor in case of absence or gaps in youth instruction staff.
Additional Responsibilities:
Assist with youth fleet maintenance as needed.
Assist in special events as needed.
Qualifications:
Required
At least two years of experience leading youth sailing or outdoor programs.
Demonstrated organizational and supervisory skills.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to work comfortably with children, families, and young adults.
Demonstrated ability to lead a strong team of instructors.
Strong understanding of and commitment to CWB’s mission.
Familiarity with boating safety and powerboat operation.
Washington State Boaters Card (NASBLA), OUPV or Masters license.
USCG approved First Aid certification.
US Sailing Level 1 Instructor certification.
Preferred
Youth racing experience
Experience with small boat sailing, sailing instruction, and small boat maintenance.
Basic woodworking and shop skills
Love of wooden boats.
