Allen grew up in the Pacific Northwest surrounded by an abundance of nature and engages with it at every opportunity. In his youth he managed a summer YMCA camp on Orcas Island while finishing college with a history degree. After a couple years of work and a bike trip across Europe, he moved to Michigan to earn his M.Ed.

From there, Allen has worked in a variety of roles including managing residence halls for the University of Washington, managing a small health care practice, and serving in several leadership roles with Seattle’s home-town airline. After retirement from corporate life, he “stumbled” onto the CWB docks when renting a rowboat. It was love at first boat! After volunteering nine years with CWB, Allen decided to come out of retirement and work full time helping maintain and build upon the legacy of founders Dick and Colleen Wagner.

Allen has been an avid sailor for 30 years, holds a USCG 50-Ton Masters license, and lives nearby with his partner Dan and dog Zoe, both also keen sailors. His absolute favorite passion is teaching the craft of sailing. “I’m a lucky guy. Working on or near the water every day doesn’t feel like a job at all!”

What is your favorite tool?

“Reading glasses. Essential to lifelong learning and reading the stories of others.”
