Before using our sailboats, you must pass a short checkout sail to make sure that you are comfortable handling traditional small boats. Checkouts take approximately 30 minutes, and require demonstrating sailing and docking skills, and understanding right-of-way rules. Because of the difference in facilities, checkouts are not transferable between our South Lake Union and Cama Beach locations; you must pass a check-out for each location.
All check-outs are scheduled on-line, at least 24 hours in advance. Keep in mind that we require at least 3 knots of wind for a check-out, so if the wind is too light, the check-out may be need to be rescheduled for a later time. In order for your check-out to remain current, you must sail a boat in our Livery at least once every 12 months. If your check-out is not current, you will be asked to schedule and pass a check-out test again.
Please note: a checkout sail is not a sailing lesson; you must be able to demonstrate all required skills single-handed. See below for the required skills. If you want to brush up on your skills first, we recommend signing up for a private lesson.
While maintaining control of the boat at all times, using clear voice commands and proper body motions, the Sailor must complete the following maneuvers single-handed in a sloop-rigged boat while controlling the mainsail, jib, and tiller. Multiple attempts are fine, given that the Sailor maintains control of the vessel at all times:
- Depart under sail
- Return to the dock under sail
- Execute several short-tacks
- Execute several controlled jibes
- Get the boat out of irons to port or starboard, as directed by instructor
- Demonstrate an understanding of Right of Way rules
- Demonstrate and discuss actions to be taken in an overboard scenario
