Youth

The Center for Wooden Boats supports youth as they develop the skills, abilities and attitudes necessary to enjoy life and contribute to the community. Programs target age-appropriate skill sets and are designed to build on each other so youth can come back summer after summer to play, learn and grow.

Toy Boat Building & Field Trips

Young kids learn how to use hand tools and discover the joys of being out on the water. Field trips align with state standards in history, social studies, math, science, and fitness.
Grades K-12

Youth Boatbuilding & Sailing Camps

Youth Sailing and Boatbuilding programs are designed to engender skills in leadership, observation and decision-making while exploring maritime heritage and skills in a dynamic hands-on environment.
Ages 8-16

Youth Development & Service Learning

Youth development and service learning programs focus on leadership, teamwork and communication skills while having fun and gaining technical skill in sailing, rowing or paddling.
Ages 14-19

Woodworking for Kids

Intermediate Sailing

  • Learn and practice intermediate sailing skills in our El Toros, including overboard drills and sailing solo

Tools & Tales

Youth Canoe Building

  • build a two-person plywood canoe and take it home at the end of class

Grad School: Advanced Sailing

  • Practice advanced sailing skills in gaff-, sprit-, and sloop-rigged boats

Model Boat Design

  • Design, build, and sail a model boat. Grades 4 to 8.

El Toro Racing

  • Location: South Lake Union

  • Prerequisites: beginning sailing
  • Learn racing rules and strategy while refining sailing skills

What Floats Your Boat?

  • Location: South Lake Union

  • Build a model boat, test it in our model dry dock, then paddle an Umiaq to see a real working drydock on Lake Union. Grades 2 to 3.

Native Seattle

  • Location: South Lake Union

  • Build and decorate a traditional Salish drop spindle and paddle an Umiaq to explore Lake Union's shoreline. Grades 4 to 8.

The Significance of Salmon
