January’s 3rd Friday Speaker: Kaci Cronkhite
For more than four decades, each month CWB has presented a speaker of wit and experience to talk about his or her special knowledge. It is also an opportunity for CWB members to meet one another and the staff. The program runs from 7pm to 9pm, with opportunities to ask questions. January’s 3rd Friday presentation will be held on January 20th.
Kaci Cronkhite of Port Townsend, circumnavigator, author and unique owner of a unique wooden boat, will lead off the 2017 3rd Friday Speaker Series at January 20 at 7 pm at CWB’s South Lake Union Boathouse. Her topic is “Finding Pax, the legacy of love for a little wooden boat”. Coincidentally, that also is the topic of her new book, which will be available for sale and signing before and after the program.
Though she had logged more than 60,000 hours as crew on boats worldwide, held a Captain’s license and had written and taught about ocean passage-making, Kaci had never entertained the idea of owning a boat until an email about a “Special Wooden Boat for Sale” popped up on her computer. So began her love affair with the spidsgatter (literally Danish for “double-ender”) Pax.
But she didn’t just become a new owner who restored her boat; she became the researcher and chronicler of Pax’s origin – a journey that took her through three countries. Along the way she met with many of the former owners of her boat, heard their stories and even found some parts for Pax. Kaci will talk about what she’s learned so far (she’s still looking for about 13 years of the boat’s history).
The program is free (donations cheerfully accepted). Light refreshments will be available.
