First Place in Chowder Cook Off!

This past Saturday saw the 20th Annual Camano Island Chamber of Commerce Chili/Chowder Cook Off held at Camano Center. Our Cama Beach Operations Manager, Chuck Gittings, and volunteers, Marcia Campbell and Michael Kyte, closed the Livery early to participate.

Their entry? A huge batch of Cama Beach Dungeness Crab Chowder made the day before in the CWB Firetruck Garage at Cama Beach State Park. This recipe involved over 20 pounds of Dungeness crab (caught by Chuck locally at Cama Beach), 30 pounds of potatoes, 10 pounds of onions, 2 pounds of garlic, 10 gallons of cream and half and half, 5 gallons of chicken broth, and a whole lot of seasonings!

The cook off is a big event on the island, with 24 teams competing either in the chowder or chili divisions, and over 1000 people coming through to taste and vote on the entries. The main competitors for the chowder division were the reigning champs, Camano Island Inn, with a seafood chowder, and Red’s Fish House with a clam chowder recipe. From the start, it was incredibly busy. Four hours of scooping out cups of chowder, warming up another batch, and of course, having a ton of fun right up until the end.

The results were announced Wednesday at Camano Center, where Chuck and Marcia graciously accepted the 1st place award! Plans have already begun for next year’s competition, so make sure that you keep the date open to come up and vote for us!
