Employment-Based Youth Projects at CWB
by Ruth Sawyer
The Center for Wooden Boats works closely with community partners to help build a bright future for youth. As part of our commitment to this work, we have recently completed several projects that are designed to help young people find well-paid, stable employment in the maritime industry,
First, we are working to share the practices that have led to the success of our Job Skills Training Program. To help other institutions develop their own employment-focused youth development programs, we are sharing our program manual and supporting documents. Please use and adapt them as you please!
Furthermore, we are working with community partners to help young people understand the variety of opportunities offered by the maritime industry. The industry is growing rapidly and offers many excellent opportunities. As part of this work, we have released two career resource guides over the past year and a half. Each provides an overview of the maritime industry plus specific opportunities for young people in our region. We’re excited for the next steps!
Thanks to the Russell Grinnell Memorial Trust, Rotary Club of Lake Union, Rotary International District 5030, and the Port of Seattle for supporting these projects.
